Stay warm and cozy during the cold weather months with sweet and spicy mulled apple cider. This classic fall drink is so easy to make at home, and you can whip up a batch to sip on in 15 minutes flat. My recipe brews up fresh cider with juicy oranges, and whole spices including cinnamon, cloves and allspice. Make it even better with a splash of bourbon at the end!
When the weather gets cold, I could sip on mulled apple cider all day every day. I love the balance of sweet and tart flavors in fresh apple cider. And then adding a few simple spices adds warmth and spice and depth that I can feel right down to my bones. Especially if those bones are freezing in the snow.
If you didn’t already know, making mulled cider at home is actually super easy. All you have to do is bring some cider to a simmer with some whole spices and any other ingredients you want to infuse in. Let it simmer away and get nice and steamy and you’re good to go.
Make sure to strain out the leftover spices and ingredients, and then ladle yourself a mug full of hot, happy goodness. If you want to make this drink even better, spike it with some booze. I love mixing this with bourbon, but spiced rum, vodka, or whiskey would all get the job done!
Mulled Cider makes everything better…
This cider is made with a very basic mulling mix and fresh oranges. It calls for a handful of fresh cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, some allspice berries and a few star anise pods. It literally doesn’t get more seasonal than that kind of spice blend. And you already know it smells amazing. Once this cider gets brewing, your whole kitchen will smell like the holidays.
There’s one step to making this mulled cider. That step is to add all the ingredients, which include a sliced up orange and the four spices. I also love to grab a knob of ginger to slice up and throw in as well. The recipe quantities I’ve included below are enough for a 2-quart jug of fresh apple cider, which you can get at the supermarket (or the apple orchard!).
Bring everything to a simmer and leave it be for 15 minutes. Then strain out the solid ingredients and serve the cider up in mugs! Garnish with cinnamon sticks and orange slices for a festive touch… and add a shot of your favorite liquor if you’re looking for an extra kick.
